During our study of J.D. Salinger's
The Catcher in the Rye, we will trace the journey of our confused
protagonist from boarding school to New York City at Christmastime. As
Holden struggles with the difficulties of "coming of age", he reveals his
view of the world, his ideals, and the challenges of his past. We will look
at how Holden's experience contrasts with the role of a traditional hero and
discuss the obstacles that Holden faces in comparison with the situations
that you face as you make the transition into increased independence.
