LATIN 1 (#B19734) Major year
course. 3 credits. Forms I-VI. Students learn vocabulary, grammar, and
syntax through reading and translating stories about a Roman family in the
city of Pompeii in 79 B.C., the year of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The
family goes on to live in Alexandria, Egypt, and Roman Britain. Through
these Latin readings and background information in English, students
progress through gradually more difficult Latin grammar and syntax. At the
same time, they encounter basic information about the social, political,
and historical background of the Roman Empire. Rome, struggles for power,
and contrasts between rich and poor are some of the cultural topics
covered.
